The battle for K League 2 automatic promotion is heating up just as the summer draws to a close. But how does the promotion schedule work, and how does it differ from previous seasons?
The most important information first; Gimcheon Sangmu are relegated from K League 1, no matter where they finish. The Sangmu club is leaving Gimcheon city, and that triggers automatic relegation.
K League 1 is expanding from 12 to 14 teams for the 2027 season, so a whopping four K League 2 teams could earn promotion.
Had Gimchceon Sangmu finished bottom as well, it would have meant only three sides could be promoted from K League 2. However, Gimcheon will not finish bottom.
If we lock in the hypothetical scenario that Gwangju finishes 12th, because they are cut adrift, it triggers the absolute best-case scenario for K League 2.
Here is exactly how it breaks down for K League 2 under your specific scenario:
1. Automatic Promotion (Top 2 Teams)
The 1st and 2nd-place finishers in K League 2 will both bypass the playoffs entirely and earn direct, automatic promotion to K League 1.
2. The K League 2 Playoff Winner (3rd Promotion Spot)
The 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th-place teams will play out the K League 2 promotion playoffs (3rd vs 6th, 4th vs 5th, followed by a final). The winner of this playoff final gets automatically promoted as the 3rd team up, without having to play a K League 1 side.
3. The K League 2 Playoff Runner-Up (4th Promotion Spot)
This is where Gwangju’s 12th-place finish matters. Because Gimcheon is relegated anyway, Gwangju cannot just stay up for free. Therefore, the team that loses the K League 2 playoff final gets a second chance. They will advance to the two-legged Promotion-Relegation Playoff against 12th-place Gwangju. If the K League 2 side wins that tie, four teams go up.

If we take 2025 as an example, only Incheon United were automatically promoted to K League 1 as champions. Suwon Samsung Bluewings (2nd) and Bucheon FC 1995 (playoff winners) advanced to meet Jeju SK (10th in K League 1) and Suwon FC (11th) respectively.
Suwon Samsung would lose 3-0 on aggregate to Jeju, meaning Jeju remained in K League 1.
Bucheon’s route was less complicated than the path the 3rd placed team will follow in 2026. Having finished 3rd in 2025, they only needed to play one match against the winners of the 4th vs. 5th playoff. That was Seongnam FC.
Due to K League’s unusual rules, Bucheon didn’t even need to win to progress any further. The team with the higher final placing just needs a draw to advance. And that’s what happened. A 0-0 draw with Seongnam guaranteed their place in Playoff Final B against Suwon FC.
Bucheon won both legs to earn a first-ever promotion to K League 1. Suwon FC were relegated.
Current Situation
The likelihood of Gwangju finishing above 12th is virtually 100% according to data. In other words, a near-certainty. That will trigger the best-case scenario above.
In K League 2, the situation is less straightforward. Suwon Samsung moved five points clear on Sunday, but Suwon FC, in third, can close the gap to three if they win their game in hand. Suwon Samsung visit Seoul E-Land next weekend. That’s 1 v 2.
Daegu are now seven points from first, but only two behind Seoul E-Land. Hwaseong FC and Busan IPark make up the top six. It is unlikely either club will qualify automatically. However, they should be safe from teams below them.
Why This Matters
Having two automatic promotion spaces is massive for the clubs challenging at the top of K League 2. No-one wants to risk the lottery of a playoff, where one bad tackle, one silly mistake, one poor refereeing decision could undo eight months of hard work.
With Gwangju almost certain to finish 12th, the K League 2 playoff final loser will be confident of progression. Gwangju are one of the worst teams in K League 1’s recent history. To earn promotion in 2025, K League 2 sides would have to overcome Jeju SK and Suwon FC, both superior to Gwangju.
The Likely Contenders
Predicting who finishes top two, 3-6, and in what order, is very difficult. The clubs in those positions are Suwon Samsung, Suwon FC, Seoul E-Land, Daegu FC, Hwaseong FC, and Busan IPark.
The top 6 will likely end with those half-dozen clubs. Several others are in contention, but the current top six has been in those positions almost since the beginning of the year.
