The 2026 Coupang Play Series has come and gone. Just like the domestic K League season, Korea’s seemingly forever heatwave had a major impact on attendances and match quality.
Supporters with withdrawals symptoms following Lee Kang-in’s dizzying Atlético debut need not worry. There are several high-profile fixtures in K Leagues 1 and 2, the WK League, and two domestic cups this month.
The standout fixture nationwide takes place on August 22. Jeonbuk Hyundai and Ulsan HD; the two clubs who’ve shared K League 1 for a decade. If Ulsan can continue their winning streak against Gangwon this weekend, they probably know their title aspirations will go on the line in Jeonju.
Jeonbuk’s defense of their title isn’t over, but they need to be flawless if they are to have any chance of overtaking FC Seoul. August 22 could be the night one half of K League’s decade-long dominant duo slips out of contention.
Seoul are still top, but form is deserting them. After a meeting with in-form Daejeon this weekend, Kim Ki-dong’s men make the very tricky short trip to hostile Anyang.
Jeju have four matches at home, all against sides below them in the table. Their last defeat came against this week’s opponents, Anyang, back in May.
There’s never a dull weekend in K League 2. This week sees the first-ever Suwon derby in the second tier at Big Bird. Bluewings are top, four points clear of Suwon FC, but the visitors boast a better goals scored record, and have a game in hand.
Even though this is an away match for Suwon FC, they don’t leave the city again this month. They close out August by welcoming Busan IPark to Castle Park.
Busan’s title bid is in tatters after four straight losses, and the fixture list isn’t helping. They welcome Hwaseong this Saturday, before traveling to Daegu and Suwon.
There are some intriguing Korea Cup Fourth Round ties on August 19. The only surviving K4 side, Jinju Citizen, have earned a dream draw away to Pohang Steelers.
Meanwhile, Dangjin and Ulsan Citizen, the last remaining K3 teams, face K League 1 opposition. Dangjin were to meet defending champions Jeonbuk at home, but that has been moved to Jeonju. Ulsan will fancy an upset against Gwangju.
Anyang take on Jeju in the only all-K League 1 tie, just a few days after they meet in Seogwipo.
In the WK League, Suwon FC Women have the advantage, but their closest challengers, Hwacheon KSBO, have one match in hand. Unfortunately, they don’t meet until next month (in the league). Suwon will travel to third place Gyeongju on August 22.
The real drama in the WK League is who secures the final playoff spot. The team that tops the table doesn’t automatically win the league. Suwon and Hwacheon will finish in the playoffs, but the race for the third (and final) spot is between five sides.
Gyeongju currently occupy that spot, but either side of hosting Suwon, they travel to playoff rivals Seoul and Incheon Red Angels. Every match this month has a bearing on the playoffs.
And, finally, the 2026 W Korea Cup has reached the quarter-final stage in its inaugural season. Every match will take place in Icheon, with two on Monday, August 24, and two the following day.
Two university sides remain, and they meet WK League opposition. The biggest tie, undoubtedly, is the meeting of Suwon FC Women and Hwacheon, the current top two, at the unusual time of 4 pm.
