K League 1 Round 31: Analysis and Predictions

Following the three-week international break, the race for the split enters its decisive phase. Round 31 kicks off a three-game sprint to Round 33, where many clubs face a make-or-break battle to meet their preseason targets. Here’s the breakdown of this weekend’s action:

🗓️ Friday, 9th October (14:00 KST)

Preview: There is plenty on the line in this one, with both clubs carrying massive stakes into the split run-in: Daejeon could do with maximum points to keep their top-six push alive, while Jeonbuk can’t afford any slip-ups if they want to qualify for the ACL Elite. Both sides have suffered just a single defeat in their last five outings, but Jeonbuk arrive on a colder run of form — winless in three since beating Pohang at the start of September.

Realistically for Daejeon, this represents their final big hurdle before the split, as they finish the regular season against Gwangju and Gimcheon. If they can get a result here, they must fancy themselves as firm favourites to secure sixth or higher. History, however, leans heavily toward the green of Jeonbuk. They dominate the head-to-head record with 13 wins to Daejeon’s three alongside nine draws. Furthermore, Daejeon haven’t tasted victory in this fixture since a 2-0 triumph in Jeonju back in October 2024.

↩️ Previous meeting: Jeonbuk 0-0 Daejeon (21st July), Daejeon 0-1 Jeonbuk (21st March)

💡 Prediction: Daejeon 1-1 Jeonbuk

🗓️ Friday, 9th October (16:30 KST)

Preview: Gangwon head into this one with just a single win in five, having played out a 0-0 bore draw against Incheon in their rearranged clash during the international break. It feels like their campaign is somewhat petering out, which is a shame given how impressive they’ve been up to this point. Bucheon, on the other hand, have lost three of their last four and would likely be happy if the season wrapped up tomorrow; survival is secured, and at this stage, that is all that really matters. If the visitors need a confidence boost, history is surprisingly in their corner, with Bucheon edging the head-to-head record (seven wins to Gangwon’s five) and they head into this one undefeated against their hosts this season.

↩️ Previous meeting: Gangwon 0-3 Bucheon (1st August), Bucheon 0-0 Gangwon (18th March)

💡 Prediction: Gangwon 2-0 Bucheon

🗓️ Friday, 9th October (16:30 KST)

Preview: This match could prove pivotal come the split if either Gangwon or Daejeon drop points in the run-in. Both sides are desperate to finish in that sixth spot and secure a Final A berth, meaning maximum points here would offer a massive boost to either club’s ambitions. With Incheon still set to square off against Gangwon next weekend, it sets up back-to-back six-pointers in the space of just ten days. History is with Pohang going into this one, and so is form: Incheon are without a win in three.

↩️ Previous meeting: Incheon 0-1 Pohang (12th May), Pohang 1-1 Incheon (15th March)

💡 Prediction: Incheon 1-1 Pohang

🗓️ Saturday, 10th October (14:00 KST)

Preview: Seoul will be eager to wrap up the title as quickly as possible, though sealing it before the split remains out of their hands without favours from elsewhere. That pursuit has hit a bit of a wobble lately, with two defeats in their last three outings—at the hands of Ulsan and Pohang—while visitors Jeju arrive in a buoyant mood, boasting a five-match unbeaten run. Adding extra intrigue, this marks the first meeting between the two sides at Seoul World Cup Stadium since May of last year, a fixture in which Jeju walked away with an emphatic 3-1 victory.

↩️ Previous meeting: Jeju 2-1 Seoul (9th May), Jeju 1-2 Seoul (15th March)

💡 Prediction: Seoul 1-1 Jeju

🗓️ Saturday, 10th October (16:30 KST)

Preview: Realistically, there isn’t a great deal on the line here for Gimcheon, and that lack of jeopardy could play directly into Anyang’s hands. The Violets still harbour outside hopes of crashing the top six, but with a brutal closing stretch against Pohang and Jeonbuk to round out the regular season, securing a Final A berth remains an uphill battle — even if mathematically alive. Both sides come into the clash buoyed by positive results last time out, with Anyang claiming an impressive scalp against Ulsan while Gimcheon took care of business against Bucheon. Both previous meetings have been a draw, so now would be a good time for Anyang to break their duck.

↩️ Previous meeting: Anyang 2-2 Gimcheon (13th May), Gimcheon 1-1 Anyang (12th April)

💡 Prediction: Gimcheon 1-1 Anyang

🗓️ Sunday, 11th October (14:00 KST)

Preview: Ulsan come into this clash in solid form, with that slip-up against Anyang representing their solitary defeat across their last five outings alongside three impressive victories. They ran riot when these two met in April, putting five past Gwangju, but found life considerably tougher last time out when they stuttered to a 1-1 draw. As for Gwangju, the campaign has been nothing short of a nightmare: they still have just a single win to their name all season, which came way back in Round 2 against Incheon, and have now succumbed to 17 defeats from their 30 matches.

↩️ Previous meeting: Gwangju 1-1 Ulsan (5th July), Ulsan 5-1 Gwangju (19th April)

💡 Prediction: Gwangju 0-2 Ulsan
